George W. Savarese, PhD, LCSW

Dr. Savarese, a licensed clinical social worker practicing since 1990, is the founder and CEO of a private psychosocial services organization, Curaeta Care Systems, which provides a wide range of psychosocial risk and resource management services including clinical, medical, and forensic social work consultation services.

In the forensic area, Dr Savarese specializes in providing case consultation services as well as expert testimony on a national basis in criminal and civil cases on both the state and federal level, as well as in military court proceedings for the United States Army, Navy, and Marines.

His experience in the forensic area covers a wide range of case types including death penalty mitigation, death penalty clemency, criminal felony and misdemeanors, attorney registration and disciplinary matters, medical malpractice, social work malpractice, workers compensation, personal injury, institutional abuse and neglect, wrongful death, immigration, military courts-martial, as well as administrative and medical discharges and separations from military service.

Dr. Savarese has testified with regard to executive clemency in Illinois, before the Illinois Attorney General’s Task Force on Violence, and at the historic hearings which lead to the moratorium on the death penalty in Illinois. His testimony in U.S. Federal Court was instrumental in defeating the imposition of the death penalty in the first legal test of a Federal law which sought the death penalty in drug conspiracy cases.

In addition to his forensic work, Dr. Savarese also provides neurobehavioral and psychosocial rehabilitation services to individuals with traumatic brain injuries and other disabling injuries and health conditions; clinical and psychosocial services to patients of home health agencies; behavioral health services to developmentally disabled adults; individual, marital and family counseling services; and continuing education training.

From 2002 to 2010, Dr. Savarese has lectured at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, teaching the graduate core curriculum course “Social Intervention: Policies and Programs.” Currently, he teaches the graduate-level core curriculum course “Psychopathology” as an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago‘s Creative Arts Therapies Department.

Prior to his teaching at the University of Chicago and Columbia College, Dr. Savarese has served as adjunct professor of Social Welfare Policy at the undergraduate level at Governors State University. Additionally, his academic work includes service as Clinical Field Instructor for various Schools of Social Work including the University of Chicago, Governors State University, the University of Illinois, and Loyola University.

Dr. Savarese’s research interests have concentrated in the areas of geriatrics and understanding and preventing violence. His doctoral work focused on the development of a family-based model of intervention with patients and families designed to offset or delay the need for institutionalization by addressing the behavioral issues that often result in placement. Since 1990 he has been conducting research which explores risk and protective factors associated with mental illness and violent behavior, particularly in the context of capital crimes. Drawing on his national experience with death penalty cases, he is currently in the process of developing a meta-database of systemic risk and protective factors with the goal of being able to more effectively identify such factors early in the lifespan in order to develop more effective preventive treatment models.

In July, 2006, Dr. Savarese presented his research on risk and protective factors associated with criminally violent behavior and children’s mental health in his presentation entitled: “Beyond the Etiology of Evil: Informing Illinois’ Child Mental Health Screening Debate Through Capital Case Mitigation” at the 23rd annual conference of the National Organization of Forensic Social Work: “Social Work and the Law: The Cutting Edge of Forensics.”

In 2009, Dr. Savarese was featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Wicked Attraction” series, in an episode entitled Consumed by Envy, which detailed his role as a forensic expert in a high profile death penalty trial.
